Description Purpose
Provides clinical support for clinical trials conducted within the Department of Anesthesiology. This position will assist in the collection, processing, and storing of blood, urine and/or tissue samples from patients for use in current or future research.

This position provides program, as well as direct internal and external client support services. Responds to inquiries and independently resolves matters of low to moderate complexity. Responsibilities require some judgment, resourcefulness, and originality, but diverse guides and precedents are usually available to apply or adapt to the circumstances. Work effort has considerable impact on client services, program and project image, with potential legal liabilities.

Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities are functional in nature, and performed under general supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
1) Bio-specimen collection, preparation, and storage.
2) Collecting bio-specimen samples from research participants and perform routine laboratory tests on samples.
3) Data collection including recording medical record data per research protocol in various electronic and paper systems.
4) Measuring and record patients' vital signs, such as height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration.
5) Maintaining accurate and thorough documentation.
6) Following specimen processing protocols to prepare samples.
7) Storing and shipping samples.
8) Sterilizing equipment and supplies, using germicides, sterilizer, or autoclave.
9) Completion of required CITI research training.
10) Completion of IATA certification to process and ship human specimens.

Supervisory/Lead Role
This position reports to the Anesthesiology Coordinator. Normally receives minimal instructions on routine work, and general instructions on new assignments. Supervision of others is not required; however, sharing of knowledge with others and team participation is expected in the role. Program, project or activity lead responsibilities will occur or be assigned in this position.

Physical Demands
This position requires standing and bending in the assessment and treatment of patients; requires manual dexterity used in processing the samples; prolonged periods of sitting and the ability to walk short distances. Work activities may require the use of elevators and/or stairs. Activities are predominantly non-manual though some manual work may be included.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a normal clinic/hospital setting and a processing lab. Exposure to diseases, body fluids, chemical and biologic hazards is possible.

Incumbent may experience the following and require medical monitoring:
1) Contact with Human Blood or Other Potentially Infectious Material (OPIM)- includes human body fluids other than feces, urine, tears and sweat
2) Patient Contact- having contact with a patient, or with potentially contaminated items including (but not limited to) blood and/or body fluids
3) Respirator Use- for individuals required to wear a respirator on a routine or emergency basis
4) Respirator Use (Voluntary)- for individuals who wear disposable masks or medical procedure masks

Requirements Requisite Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
1) High School Diploma or equivalent;
2) 1 - 2 years of work experience in a clinical setting;
1) An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations
1) Certified Nursing Assistant, Paramedic of Emergency Medical Technician

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
1) Experience performing and recording vital signs including blood pressure, temperatures, heart rate, oxygen saturations, weight and height measurements.
2) Skilled in keeping detailed data collection records.
3) Ability and willingness to work evening, nights and weekends as needed for research projects.
4) Ability and willingness to complete required research training through CITI.
5) Ability and willingness to complete IATA certification to process and ship human specimens (blood, urine, fecal material samples).
6) Ability to follow written research protocols.
7) Skilled in written/oral communication.
8) Knowledge of basic computer applications using Word and Excel.
9) Excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate effectively with patients and families; pharmaceutical company personnel; regulatory and monitoring agency personnel; and, internal staff members.
10) Working knowledge of appropriate patient assessment techniques.
11) Knowledge of the information and techniques needed for diagnosis and treatment. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
12) Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.
13) Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
14) Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
15) Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others and maintain them over time.
16) Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
17) Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.
18) Ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution, solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
19) Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

21) Ability to learn how to reproducibly use a pipette and maintain safe lab practices.
