Description Purpose
The purpose of this position is to support research activities in the Gallagher Lab related to genetic variation and cellular response to stress. This position will also provide part-time support to the BioNano Research Facilities (BNRF), a spectrometry and spectroscopy core providing services to researchers across WVU.

This position performs various support duties, and responds to inquiries and resolves matters of relatively low complexity. Responsibilities require some basic decision making and resourcefulness within available guides and precedents. Work effort impacts client services, program and project image, with nominal liabilities.

Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities are functional in nature, and performed under direct supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
1) Gallagher Laboratory support - conduct basic experiments for ongoing projects related to publications and grant applications, including:
a. PCR
b. Growing yeast
c. Western blots
d. Ordering supplies
e. Maintaining equipment
2) BRNF support:
a. Perform basic sample preparation experiments such as SDS-PAGE, BCA assay, and liquid extraction
b. Operate routine, robust instruments such as a CD spectrometer and train others to use them
c. Provide routine laboratory maintenance such as refilling cryogenic tanks, restocking supplies, and performing light cleanup.

Supervisory/Lead Role
Reports to the Principal Investigator, but takes guidance and direction from the BioNano Research Facilities Manager. This position will normally receive or follow specific instructions for routine work. Supervision of others is not required, however, sharing of knowledge with others and team participation is expected in the role.

Physical Demands
Activities require manual skill to perform accurate micropipetting of samples, mixing of small volumes of DNA/RNA, standing sitting by the bench, lifting of fluid-containing carboys, bending, carrying lightweight objects (up to 40 lbs), and transporting mice from laboratory to animal facility, traversing stairs or using elevators. Good hand-eye coordination, precision of movements, and attention to detail is required.

Work Environment
Work will be performed in a standard laboratory environment including using computers and laboratory equipment with electrical connections. Some work will be performed in some laboratory chemicals have an odor or toxic fumes. Some work will be performed in the dark room either under dim red light or in the complete darkness using night vision equipment.

The following items have been determined as possible job exposures of this position requiring WVU EHS medical monitoring:
1) Contacting Hazardous Chemicals – daily or weekly, using strong acids or caustics, fuel or tar products or cancer causing chemicals
Requirements Requisite Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
1) Bachelor’s degree in biology, or related scientific field;
2) 0 – 2 years of related experience in molecular or cellular biology
3) An equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
1) Experience in the following areas:
a. DNA & RNA isolation, genotyping samples by PCR/
restriction digestion / sequence analysis,
b. DNA cloning, maintenance of tissue culture cells and working with laboratory animals.
2) Ability to modify and optimize research protocols as needed for the successful completion of the specific experiment.
3) Knowledge and laboratory experience in general genetics/molecular biology techniques.
4) Ability to modify and optimize research protocols as needed for successful completion of the specific experiment.
5) Knowledge of laboratory environment and appropriate procedures.
6) Skilled at using computers and applicable programs/applications.
7) Skilled at assessing chemical concentrations/amounts of various chemical components in solutions.
8) Knowledge of plant and animal organisms, their tissues, cells, functions, interdependencies and interactions with each other and the environment.
9) Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals, and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
10) Skilled at using scientific rules and methods to solve problems.
11) Skilled at using related laboratory equipment.
12) Ability to teach, train, oversee and assist other staff, and graduate students.
13) Good organizational skills and self-motivation.
14) Willingness and ability to learn new protocols in a rapid manner.
15) Ability to get along with others in a group setting.

Education and/or Experience
1) Experience with mass spec and next-generation sequences.
