||Cystic Fibrosis Mental Health Coordinator
The purpose of this position is to increase services available to patients and families of patients with Cystic Fibrosis. Incumbent collaborates with local, regional, and statewide services to build service offerings for patients. This position is an active
member of the CF Care Team.
This position provides program, as well as direct internal and external client support services. Responds to inquiries and resolves matters of moderate complexity. Responsibilities require theoretical and practical knowledge, judgement, resourcefulness and
originality. Diverse guides and precedents are usually available to apply or adapt to the circumstances. Work effort has considerable impact on client services, program and project image with potential legal liabilities.
Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities are functional in nature, and performed under general supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
1) Program building of a mental health service for patients with cystic fibrosis, their families and caregivers, as well as those with failed newborn screen for CF.
2) Collaborate with local (CF team, hospitalists, Dept. of Behavior Medicine & Psychiatry, Dept. of Psychology), regional (CF Center at Women & Children’s CAMC), and statewide services (Dept. of Health & Human Resources), as well as CF Foundation resources,
to build services.
3) Initiate billing for services.
4) Facilitate telemedicine resources for communication with rural patients.
5) Participate in broader vision/planning for mental health services for WVU Medicine-Children’s Hospital.
6) Act as an active member of CF pediatric and adult care teams, attending clinical care conferences, quality improvement, retreats, and clinics.
7) Attend national North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference (NACFC) at least every other year, preferably annually.
8) Attend the spring regional Cystic Fibrosis Regional Meeting for dieticians & social works at least every other year, preferably annually.
9) Build program for transition over 3 years to self-sufficiency.
10) Facilitate ongoing use depression and anxiety guideline recommendation
a. Assess scores
b. Supervise, partner as well as provide mentorship with existing LICSW
c. Coordinate with Psychology Department services
11) Coordinate evidence based treatment for:
a. Anxiety and/or depression among patients, caregivers, spouse
b. Supportive services of newborn screening
c. New diagnosis
d. Changes in clinical course
e. Parenting skills in context of chronic disease
g. Prolonged hospital stays
i. Lung transplant evaluation
l. Family: siblings & their coping skills
12) Develop and maintain a referral network of community-based mental health practitioners:
a. Network in rural counties to determine mental health services in areas for all CF patients; outreach/visit counties, home visits with patients, school
b. Evaluate the role of the WVU Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) resources to collaborate with rural WV counties and mental health (available funds to partner with State of WV), also WVU Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI)
13) Serve as a liaison for mental health care in CF between CF team, clinical psychologists, Department of Psychiatry, DHHR, State of WV, hospitalist contacts (residents, pulmonary fellows, and hospitalist team), PCP/community practitioners, school, workplace,
lung transplant center.
14) Investigate other areas of potential related research.
Position reports to…. Normally receives minimal instructions on routine work and general instructions on new assignments. Will receive advice when a difficulty arises in a current project or situation. Offers input on determining methods or procedures. Sharing
of knowledge with others and team participation is expected in this role. Program, project or activity lead responsibilities will occur in this position.
This position requires a moderate amount of climbing stairs, handing, reaching and the ability to carry 10 pounds. Activities are predominantly non-manual though some manual work not directly involved with altering or transporting of products may be included.
Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available. Extensive traveling throughout assigned region will be required. The incumbent is responsible to know and comply with all safety procedures.
The following item has been determined as a possible job exposure of this position requiring WVU EHS medical monitoring:
1) Patient Contact- having contact with a patient, or with potentially contaminated items including (but not limited to) blood and/or body fluids.
Education and/or Experience
1) Master’s degree in human services or related field;
2) 5 – 7 years of experience working with mental health advocacy and/or research
3) Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations
1) Must have, or be eligible for, licensure as a Social Worker or certified Social Worker by the West Virginia Board of Social Work Examiners.
2) Valid drivers’ license.

10) Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
11) Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
12) A knowledge of Family Based Care, Foster Care and Adult Family Care programs and all related MR/DD services.
13) Incumbent will be required to work and respond to a variety of different and unique situations independently using a variety of criteria with a minimum of supervision.
