The purpose of this position is to apply an intensive and comprehensive consultation and training model throughout West Virginia for individuals with developmental disabilities services who have challenging behaviors or are in or at risk of being in crisis.
The position will primarily provide consultation for children with complex support needs such as serious emotional disorders or co-existing mental health and intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD) diagnoses and individuals with IDD being discharged
from state psychiatric hospitals.
This position provides program, as well as direct internal and external client support services. Responds to inquiries and resolves matters of moderate complexity. Responsibilities require theoretical and practical knowledge, judgement, resourcefulness and
originality. Diverse guides and precedents are usually available to apply or adapt to the circumstances. Work effort has considerable impact on client services, program and project image with potential legal liabilities.
Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities are functional in nature, and performed under general supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
1) Provide consulting, training and assessment activities for personnel who work with consumers who have complex support needs including IDD.
2) Consult with all stakeholders as a resource on positive behavior support.
3) Develop a variety of written materials including findings of individual functional behavior assessments, as well as development of behavioral recommendations, behavior support plans and discharge plans.
4) Promote, screen and accept referrals for support from a variety of agents, including parents, case managers, advocates, etc.
5) Develop and provide training and information dissemination activities to agencies, staff, parents, individuals providing services and others about the project goals and procedures using on-site visits and/or distance technologies.
6) Facilitate a variety of problem solving and action work groups. Use group graphics and communication facilitation techniques to produce person-centered plans and develop “personal futures plans” for consumers.
7) Assist in project evaluation activities, including submitting required productivity, data and program reports to the Center’s Database Administrator and the Positive Behavior Support Program Manager.
8) Participate in CED staff and committee meetings and appropriate Center meetings.
9) Perform other related duties as assigned by the Positive Behavior Support Program Manager.
Position reports to the PBS Program Manager. Normally receives minimal instructions on routine work and general instructions on new assignments. Will receive advice when a difficulty arises in a current project or situation. Offers input on determining methods
or procedures. Sharing of knowledge with others and team participation is expected in this role. Program, project or activity lead responsibilities will occur in this position.
May frequently walk, stand, stoop, and reach. Ability to lift up to approximately 10 pounds and/or occasionally lifting up to approximately 20 pounds. Manual dexterity to operate PC and other office equipment. Activities are predominantly non-manual though
some manual work not directly involved with altering or transporting of products may be included.
Works in standard office atmosphere with shared space and equipment. This position requires some travel throughout the state. Incumbent is responsible to know and comply with all safety procedures.
Education and/or Experience
1) Master’s degree in Psychology, Special Education, Social Work, Counseling or related;
2) 5 – 7 years of experience working with individuals with IDD, mental illness, Autism or other co-existing mental health and IDD diagnoses.
3) An equivalent combination of experience and education

1) A valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications & Credentials
Education and/or Experience
1) Experience working with staff and administrators who provide services to individuals with IDD.
