Description Purpose
This position supports multiple immunology-related projects in a research team in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cell Biology. These projects use animal models and clinical specimens to elucidate the role of cytokine signaling in autoimmune and infectious diseases, with recent focus on post-stroke pneumonia and other lung-related diseases. Incumbent is the driving force of the research and will be responsible for a variety of duties.

The incumbent serves as a resource contact relative to the research project. Depth skills, knowledge, and interpretive abilities, as well as some creativity, are required to successfully perform duties. Independently uses professional concepts and organizational policies to solve a wide range of moderate to complex problems in imaginative and practical ways. Work effort often addresses non-routine matters within established protocol, guidelines, and/or policies. Work effort has significant impact on client services and operations, producing moderate to major organizational, legal and financial results and/or liabilities. Position duties require oversight of projects.

Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities are functional in nature, and performed under limited supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
1) Conducting immunology-related research, such as animal experiments, primary cell culture, and experiments that employ various cell and molecular biology techniques, with minimal supervision.
2) Overseeing and supporting routine laboratory operations, such as ordering and inventory management, development of experimental protocols, preparation of reagents, and maintenance of animal colonies.
3) Training graduate and undergraduate students and assisting them on their research projects.
4) Assisting the principal investigator in preparing manuscript and grant applications.
5) Assisting the principal investigator in the acquisition of funding from public, private, and governmental sources.
6) Presenting in scientific conferences
7) Maintaining detailed logs of work related activities, including accurate laboratory records and data on research methods, procedures, and results.
8) Overseeing research facilities and personnel
a. Assure compliance with research protocols and safety requirements.
b. Oversee and direct undergraduate and graduate researchers in the completion of experiments.
c. Maintain lab equipment; keep accurate inventory of lab assets; monitor and assure proper use and conditions of lab equipment.

Supervisory/Lead Role
This position reports to the Principal Investigator. It normally receives no instructions on routine work, but will receive instructions/advice when starting a new project or when a difficulty arises in the current project. Typically determines methods or procedures and consults with the supervisor on new assignments. General sharing of knowledge and team participation is expected in the role. Guidance or supervision of others may be required.

Physical Demands
Manual dexterity for day to day operations to operate a computer and other lab equipment with speed and accuracy. Mental dexterity to focus on experimental protocols. This position requires skill and accuracy in actions required to perform and use all laboratory and office equipment (such as thermocyclers, centrifuges, autoclaves, computers, printers, copiers, etc.), as well as a high degree of exactness in the use of hand instruments. Requires sitting, walking, standing, bending, and lifting (up to 15 pounds) or moving of equipment or machinery (using a dolly or cart) up to 75 pounds.

Work Environment
Work will be performed in a standard laboratory environment including using computers and laboratory equipment with electrical connections. The incumbent must comply with all laboratory safety procedures and clothing/equipment requirements. Exposure to laboratory animals and blood samples may occur, however protective measures will be provided. All University safety courses and training sessions will be completed by the technician.
The following items have been determined as possible job exposures of this position requiring WVU EHS medical monitoring:
1) Animal Contact- direct exposure to vertebrate animals, animal tissues or research with body fluids or wastes
2) Contacting Hazardous Chemicals –daily or weekly, using strong acids or caustics, fuel or tar products or cancer causing chemicals
3) Contact with Human Blood or Other Potentially Infectious Material (OPIM)- includes human body fluids other than feces, urine, tears and sweat
4) Hazardous Materials Responder- for those certified as OSHA Hazardous Materials Responders or lab employees that clean chemical spills in their work
5) Human Pathogen and Biological Research (BSL2+/3)- for those working with or in proximity to certain biological agents
6) Patient Contact- having contact with a patient, or with potentially contaminated items including (but not limited to) blood and/or body fluids
7) Respirator Use (Voluntary)- for individuals who wear disposable masks or medical procedure masks
8) Scientific Research- research with nanoparticles, lasers, anesthetic, fuels or mining, aquatic or diving etc.
Requirements Requisite Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
1) PhD in immunology, cell and molecular biology, or related science field.
2) Experience working with infectious and/or allergic lung disease models
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
1) Ability to manage animal colonies and work with mouse models
2) Cell culture techniques
3) Standard cell and molecular biology techniques, such as DNA and RNA purification, cloning, PCR, western blotting
4) Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
5) Ability to work independently to complete assigned projects
6) Ability to do strategic planning for program development.
