Description Purpose
The purpose of this position is to provide assistive technology demonstrations, trainings, information referral, and electronic access to consumers to consumers, families, and service providers. The Specialist will also research policies, practices and procedures, which facilitate or impede the provision of AT devices or services; conduct outreach activities; collaborate with other agencies; seek additional funding sources to support the assistive technology program.

The Specialist responds to inquiries and independently resolves matters of low to moderate complexity. Responsibilities require some judgment, resourcefulness, and originality, but diverse guides and precedents are usually available to apply or adapt to the circumstances. Work effort has considerable impact on client services, program and project image, with potential legal liabilities.

Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities are functional in nature, and performed under general supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
1) Demonstrate a wide variety of assistive technology devices and services that address the needs of people with all types of disabilities; be able to explain their use in the context of everyday living, recreation/leisure, education, employment, etc.
2) Perform clinical evaluation of consumer’s needs for assistive technology.
3) Provide training and technical assistance to program subcontractors, service providers, consumers, agency personnel and related groups regarding disabilities and assistive technology devices and services.
4) Set up exhibits and demonstrations at conferences, meetings and other venues. Make presentations to groups about assistive technology and related issues.
5) Conduct research for materials development and dissemination activities, create outreach materials (brochures/flyers/fact sheets) and produce basic information packets on specialized topics in alternate formats. Compile and keep current resource information on products, directions for use, maintenance and funding sources for such products/devices.
6) Respond to requests for information and/or appropriate referral to other agencies or businesses.
7) Serve as a liaison for collaboration with non-profit partners, community organizations and interagency committees and commissions.
8) Provides productivity and program reports to the Center’s database manager and Program Manager, WVATS.

Supervisory/Lead Role
This position reports to WVATS Program Manager. Normally receives minimal instructions on routine work, general instructions on new assignments. Supervision of others is not required; however, sharing of knowledge with others and team participation is expected in the role.

Physical Demands
Activities are predominantly non-manual though some responsibilities require the occasional lifting of up to 40lbs. The incumbent must be able to effectively hear and communicate with others. Close visual acuity, the ability to adjust focus, identify and distinguish colors, peripheral vision and depth perception are required in the job. Operates fax machine, PCs and other office equipment.

Work Environment
Works in standard office atmosphere with shared space and equipment. The noise levels are moderate in the office area where the position is located. Position also requires travel to various locations including schools, workplaces, and homes. Responsible to know and comply with all safety procedures.
Requirements Requisite Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
1) Bachelor’s degree;
2) 2 or more years of experience working with individuals with varying disabilities.
3) Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations
1) Valid driver’s license

1) Proficiency in using specialized hardware, software, peripherals and electronic communication systems.
2) Strong oral and writing skills with emphasized attention to detail and accuracy.
3) Ability to work efficiently and effectively with minimum supervision.
4) Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations, small groups, and large groups of consumers and professionals.
5) Ability to rapidly learn academic, administrative and organizational policies and procedures within the affected work area and to interpret and apply these policies to unique work situations.
6) Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
7) Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
8) Knowledge of programs and services available to persons with disabilities.
9) Knowledge of computer equipment, including proficient use of personal computers and software applications.
10) Ability to travel to off-site locations that may not be available via public transportation. Travel may include overnight stays.
11) Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act and other laws pertaining to disability and assistive technologies.

Preferred Qualifications & Credentials
Education and/or Experience
1) Master’s degree
2) Experience working with current assistive technology software and devices in the areas of computer access, cognitive supports, communication, low vision, deaf/hard of hearing and environmental controls.
3) RESNA-certified Assistive Technology Professional (ATP). (Willing to train a qualified applicant)
