Description Purpose
The purpose of this position is to assist the Principal Investigator on research projects related to molecular cell biology and nanotechnology.

This position provides program, as well as direct internal and external client support services. Responds to inquiries and resolves matters of low to moderate complexity. Responsibilities require general theoretical knowledge, as well as some judgement, resourcefulness and originality. Diverse guides and precedents are available to apply or adapt to the circumstances. Work effort has considerable impact on client services, program and project image with potential legal liabilities.

Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities are functional in nature, and performed under general supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
1) Design and conduct research projects related to molecular and cell biology and nanotechnology
2) Prepare lab reports, manuscripts, and grant proposals related to the research.
3) Assist the Principal Investigator in training students and lab personnel.

Supervisory/Lead Role
Position reports to the Principal Investigator. Normally receives general instructions on routine work and detailed instructions on new assignments. Will receive guidance when a difficulty arises in a current project or situation. May offer input on determining methods or procedures. General sharing of knowledge and team participation is expected in this role. Program, project or activity lead and work coordination may be assigned in this position.

Physical Demands
Manual dexterity for day to day operations to operate a computer and other lab equipment with speed and accuracy. Mental dexterity to focus on experimental protocols. This position requires skill and accuracy in actions required to perform and use all laboratory and office equipment (such as cryostats, microscopes, centrifuges, autoclaves, computers, printers, copiers, etc…), as well as a high degree of exactness in the use of hand instruments. Requires sitting, walking, standing, bending, and lifting (up to 15 pounds) or moving of equipment or machinery (using a dolly or cart) up to 75 pounds.

Work Environment
Work will be performed in a standard laboratory environment including using computers and laboratory equipment with electrical connections. The incumbent must comply with all laboratory safety procedures and clothing/equipment requirements. Exposure to laboratory animals and blood samples may occur, however protective measures will be provided. All University safety courses and training sessions will be completed by the technician.

The following items have been determined as possible job exposures of this position requiring WVU EHS medical monitoring:

1) Animal Contact – direct exposure to vertebrate animals, animal tissues or research with body fluids or wastes
2) Scientific Research – research with nanoparticles, lasers, anesthetic, fuels or mining, aquatic or diving, etc.
Requirements Requisite Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
1) PhD in biomedical sciences or bioengineering;
And
2) 2 - 4 years of research laboratory experience with exposure to laboratory procedures, likely including instrumentation, tissue culture and animal handling.
Or
3) An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
1) Skilled in culturing mammalian cells and handling animals.
2) Knowledge of animal husbandry.
3) Ability to operate necessary laboratory instruments and equipment, including gel electrophoresis, ELISA, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, and basic biological technologies.
4) Working knowledge of research methods including measurement, data collection and validity issues.
5) Skilled to identify complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
6) Ability to maintain attention to detail.
7) Knowledge of animal organisms, their tissues, cells, functions, interdependencies, and interactions with each other and the environment.
8) Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
9) Strong analytical skills with the ability to make judgements and recommendations based on statistical analysis.
10) Familiarity with statistical software, statistical techniques, statistical process control principles, and geographical data display.
11) Proficiency in basic computer applications such as MS Office, email and internet.
12) Advanced knowledge of scientific terminology.
13) Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
14) Ability to perform clerical functions with accuracy and attention to detail.
15) Ability to apply mathematical concepts in order to calculate proportions, percentages, and volumes (e.g. making routine buffers).
16) Ability to perform effectively under conditions of fluctuating workload.
17) Ability to work independently to complete assigned projects.
18) Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out complex instructions furnished in written oral or diagram form.
