Design Engineer I/II Primary Job Purpose:

The Product Design Engineer is responsible for the development, evaluation, production, and support of products for QBP’s proprietary brands. Why Join Us? You will be responsible for the design, development, and support products for our All-City, Civia, and Heller brands. In addition to designing awesome product across QBP’s brands, this role will also be the public technical face for the All-City team. Started in 2010, All-City has grown and expanded to a premier urban cycling brand. Today, the brand has 12 complete bike models, a variety of aftermarket components and accessories, a rock star sponsored race team, and an ever growing customer base that connects with the passion and message of All-City. Organizational/Reporting Structure: The Design Engineer is a core member of the Product Design and Development team, and they will report to the Engineering Manager.

The Design Engineer will be responsible for product engineering across a number of brands, with the majority of time spent on All-City.

Job Tasks, Responsibilities, Accountabilities*:

  • Product design and development 
  • Contribute technical and creative insight for new product ideas and iterative changes to existing product. 
  • Use SolidWorks to create 3D computer models, perform structural analysis, create technical drawings, and manage files within our PDM system. 
  • Coordinate lab testing with manufacturers or 3rd party suppliers to test, qualify, and document products within the applicable government regulations and standards. 
  • Help create and follow product timelines to ensure milestones are met and the product is delivered according to schedule.  Communicate effectively with domestic and international manufacturers, vendors, and suppliers; internal and external testing groups; and customer service and sales departments. 
  • Develop tolerance schemes and inspection processes to control the quality of product during production. 
  • Ensure product meets development standards through ride and lab testing.

Research and Development:

  • Perform design studies and calculations to support R&D pre-kickoff product definitions. 
  • Complete development projects to prove R&D technologies prior to implementation. 
  • Invent! Bring your passion to developing your own ideas, and share them. 
  • Determine necessary qualification and testing measures during iterative product changes. 
  • Create and execute development testing as necessary to support new product development. Product & Brand support 
  • Be a brand representative and champion for All-City within QBP, at events, and to the general public. 
  • Collaborate with marketing to produce technical content for specific products and brands, possibly including instructions, product technical information, concept renderings, or blogs. 
  • Monitor and review warranty claims to identify systemic problems, as well as provide technical support to the customer service agents. In fulfilling your primary responsibilities, you will do at least several of the following: 
  • Use the 3D printer to create rapid prototypes 
  • Coordinate prototype fabrication with international, domestic, or internal resources 
  • Evaluate new products through assembly, lab, and ride testing 
  • Use QBP’s new product design & testing space to create and evaluate prototypes 
  • Create and manage testing user groups for new products to ensure quality feedback on designs In addition to your primary responsibilities, you have the opportunity to fulfill secondary responsibilities based on your skills and interests. These might include: 
  • Performing supplier audits on new and existing manufacturers. 
  • Represent the brands and QBP’s core values at events, tradeshows, etc. 
  • Follow industry trends and market directions. 
  • Support the development of QBP’s testing lab and test standards. 
  • Support the development of QBP’s product development process.

Requirements

Job Qualifications:  Primary Qualifications (you really need to be good at these):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or an active PE license 
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and design creativity. 
  • Ability to thrive in an international work environment and overcome language barriers. 
  • SolidWorks or other 3D software experience: 3D Modeling (including assemblies and surfacing) and 2D Drawings. 
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with proven ability to manage multiple deadlines without substantial oversight. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to use the computer extensively 
  • Ability and willingness to test and evaluate a variety of cycling products in sometimes extreme conditions, including cold and wet. 
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestic and international 2 – 6 weeks per year.
  • Ability to drive a car/van/truck and be a QBP approved driver 
  • Secondary Qualifications (all of these could be followed with “is/are a plus.”) 
  • Experience with CAE Analysis. 
  • Experience working with a PDM or PLM system. 
  • Experience with ISO 4210. 
  • Manufacturing experience in Welding, Forming, Machining, Assembly, and/or Heat treatment. 
  • Experience with engineering process and quality controls. 
  • 2+ years of experience, preferably in the outdoor goods industry, or equivalent personal experience. 
  • Bicycle industry experience.  Familiarity with Chinese language and business customs. 
