The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. We are currently seeking a Research Manager for the Health Research & Educational Trust (HRET) located in our Chicago office.


The Research Manager provides oversight and support for research and evaluation studies at Health Research and Educational Trust (HRET). Contributes to the design of technical studies though literature searches and is responsible for writing, synthesizing, and disseminating results to the field. Manages a team, implements and provides daily oversight for data collection, data analysis, and interpretation. Works across multiple research and evaluation projects, and serves as investigator, task leader, research manager, or principle investigator on funded research. Designs and conducts quantitative and qualitative analyses, authors study reports and journal articles, and develops grant proposals. 

Essential Functions

  1. Manage direct reports and develop a high performing team that supports HRET’s research activities and programs.
  2. Manage data and information, including managing essential data files that support research activities.
  3. Conduct literature searches, reviewing and summarizing key findings from relevant publications and articles.
  4. Maintain current knowledge of the status and outcomes of research related activities.
  5. Design and contribute to research products, including research papers, peer-reviewed journal articles, and poster presentations.
  6. Conduct and monitor research activities, including drafting interview protocols, writing survey questions, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
  7. Document research processes, monitor and report on progress of research and evaluation activities and programs.
  8. Collaborate with other internal American Hospital Association business units to assess research support services needed.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.


  • Master's degree in Statistics, Research, Economics, Public Health, Epidemiology.
  • 7-10 years experience with a minimum 7 years of research experience is required.
  • Experience with health services research including both qualitative and quantitative analyses experience is required.
  • Experience with statistical analyses and modeling is required.
  • Minimum 3 years of supervision experience is required.
  • Experience with managing large budgets is required.
  • Experience working on funded grants and with major funding agencies is preferred.
  • Knowledge Requirements: Advanced research project management experience. Advanced knowledge of quantitative and qualitative analysis. Advanced knowledge of research and statistical methodology. Extensive experience with qualitative research methods. Experience in the analysis of large datasets. Knowledge of contract negotiations.
  • Technical Requirements: Experience with analytics software and solutions, SAS is preferred. Advanced skills with Excel. Intermediate computer and Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) skills. Ability to learn new technology.
  • Abilities Required: Proven ability developing and managing lasting collaborative relationships is required. Ability to write and speak about projects to a variety of audiences, including project staff, study partners, senior researchers, hospital executives and the general public. Ability to work simultaneously on several activities and handle multiple demands with efficiency and tact. Ability to work independently as well as within a team; to take initiative. Proven ability undertaking tasks essential to shaping a research agenda and implementing project activities.
  • Less than 10% travel.
