The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. We are currently seeking a Program Manager, High Reliability, for the Health Research & Educational Trust (HRET) located in our Chicago office.


The Program Manager, High Reliability is responsible for developing and managing project plans to ensure successful set-up and implementation of assigned projects for the Health Research & Educational Trust (HRET). This position will be a critical thinker who can create new or adapt existing processes that support project operations and execution through program implementation, educational content development, quality improvement coaching and communications (internal and external). Develops and maintains a wide variety of external partnerships with subject matter experts and quality improvement leaders. Work experience in quality improvement with supporting change and/or developing educational materials, is required. Work experience in a health care environment with clinical decision making is preferred.

Collaborates within HRET’s matrixed organization (e.g., Population Health, Delivery System Innovation) to draw in the right expertise at the right time to support the work of their assigned projects. Works collaboratively across the American Hospital Association (AHA) to advance initiatives and knowledge exchange that enhance value for AHA members.

The High Reliability practice area currently manages a set of national quality improvement collaboratives that focus on reducing harms and infections and improving safety cultures in health care settings. This practice area aims to both teach others in its project work and implement itself high reliability concepts.

HRET is the not-for-profit research and education affiliate of the AHA. HRET’s applied research and innovation diffusion approach seeks to create new knowledge, tools and support that accelerates health care improvement by engaging health care leaders, providers and practitioners within the communities they serve. Our vision is to create a society of healthy communities, where all individuals reach their highest potential for health.

Essential Functions

  1. Develops, updates, and implements the project work plan for various internal and externally-facing programs. Supports the team with integrated program and project planning: annual program planning, alignment of program goals with project objectives, revising and updating of tasks, timelines, and deliverables as appropriate.
  2. Provides day-to-day oversight of all aspects of various programs. Provides and ensures effective communication with all stakeholders, including status reporting, risk management, issue resolution among all internal and external stakeholders, including coordination with other AHA components, subcontractors and consultants, and other participating organizations.
  3. Monitors and summarizes progress of programs which include, but is not limited to: designing spreadsheets and other tools to manage processes and tracks progress against milestones and budget.
  4. Facilitates organization-wide efforts to improve virtual and in-person education modalities that utilize the latest in adult-education theory, clinical education and narrative leadership.
  5. Ensure all work is undertaken in compliance with IRB, GAAP, government and AHA policies in collaboration with subject matter experts at HRET and AHA.
  6. Supports the creation and updating of annual program budgets, reviews monthly financial and labor reports, and ensures that the program’s spending is aligned with available resources.
  7. Cultivates and manages relationships with project team members and funding organization(s), if applicable; Interfaces and communicates with member relations, external partners, and project participants to ensure that project goals are achieved. 
  8. Ensures work of external vendors accomplishes the day-to-day project objectives and is compliant with all AHA, HRET, and project-specific requirements related to time keeping, data use, and expense reporting.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.






  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Nursing, Public Health, Public Policy, Business.
  • 3-5 years experience with a minimum 3 years of work experience related to health care quality, population health, community health and/or policy. 
  • Minimum 2 years of experience managing and developing multiple, concurrent projects and deadlines.  
  • Experience working with and within the health care delivery system, non-profit, government or academic/research settings with a health care focus is strongly preferred.  
  • Master’s degree in Clinical Studies (e.g. nursing, social work, etc.) Public Health, Public Policy or Business is preferred. Graduate education in health-related sciences may be substituted for years of experience.
  • Knowledge Requirements: Knowledge of clinical care and its improvement is required. Knowledge of healthcare organization operations is required. Knowledge of effective design and facilitation of meeting discussions.
  • Technical Requirements: Intermediate computer and Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook) skills are required. Proficiency with content management software (e.g. Sharepoint) is preferred. Ability to learn new technology is required.
  • Abilities Required: Ability to exercise good judgment and sound decision-making in a variety of situations. Ability to maintain a high level of integrity, professionalism and confidentiality. Ability to influence, but to also build consensus and maintain good relations with funders and organizational partners. Ability to be an effective listener and be willing to work as a part of a team where their advice will be considered carefully, but not always accepted. Ability to assume full responsibility for specific operational tasks, be capable of delegating work to others in AHA and or HRET, but also willing to perform tasks that others with less skill or training might be capable of doing.
