The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. We are currently seeking a Senior Program Manager, AHA Physician Alliance, located in our Chicago office.

The Senior Program Manager oversees and participates in the development, implementation and execution of a variety of projects that are in support of the AHA Physician Alliance. Leads project staff and oversees their work in order to implement, execute and achieve strategic, financial and compliance goals for the program.  Builds relationships with clinical leaders; gathers and provides information on key policy issues and develops education and resources related to physician leadership, well-being and resilience and delivering high value care. Strengthens relationships with related organizations, collaborates and communicates with external clients as well as partnering organizations on projects. Collaborates with AHA staff team members to ensure program goals are met.

Essential Functions

  1. Oversees and participates in developing and managing project work plans on assigned programs. Contributes to high-level, strategic planning to define program objectives and determine delivery model that assures successful outcomes.
  2. Provides day-to-day oversight of the development of education and communication resources that develop strong relationships with physicians and awareness of the program benefits and offerings.
  3. Builds and maintains relationships and strategic partnerships with physician leadership and related organizations and represents the program. Gathers input, analyzes and synthesizes information across multiples sources to outline and develop resources. 
  4. Manages and oversees work of non-managerial staff to accomplish the day-to-day program objectives; this includes providing performance feedback to their reports, mentoring them and supporting their professional development, hiring and addressing employee performance issues.
  5. Collaborates with individuals across AHA business units to advance the work of the AHA Physician Alliance; such as with member relations, external partners, and program participants to ensure that program goals are achieved.
  6. Develops and updates annual budgets for programs within the Alliance and shares responsibility for overseeing budgets, reviewing monthly financials, and ensuring that the program’s spending is aligned with available resources.
  7. Leads efforts to continually evaluate and improve program by enhancing efforts to make business cases for physician involvement activities, improve strategies for driving organizational culture change, and better understand how operational processes within health care organizations can be leveraged.
  8. Keeps abreast of needs of physician leadership, models continuous professional development, and supports AHA culture and values.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.




  • Bachelor's degree in Health Care Administration, Health Policy, Communication or related.
  • 5-7 years experience with a minimum 5 years of experience leading and/or implementing programs involving hospitals/health systems, physician relations, and research is required.
  • Experience working with physicians and associations and/or professional societies is required.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Knowledge Requirements: Knowledge of physician issues; health care organization operations; demonstrated knowledge of project management; knowledge of quality improvement methodologies and tools such as Baldrige, Lean Six Sigma, Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle is required. Advanced research knowledge is required.
  • Technology Requirements: Intermediate Microsoft Office and computer (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) skills. Ability to learn new technology and software.
  • Abilities Required: Ability to exercise good judgment and sound decision-making in a variety of situations. Ability to maintain a high level of integrity, professionalism and confidentiality; to influence, build consensus and maintain good relations with funders and organizational partners; to work independently as well as part of a team. Ability to influence teams of internal and external experts to complete work in a timely manner that supports the program; to be committed to the professional development of staff and creating a high performing team; to take initiative, be resourceful and promptly address issues. Ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with colleagues and external partners. Ability to develop and execute workplans; to develop and manage budget and to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines. Ability to learn quickly and continually learn; to work with ambiguity.
  • 10-30% travel required.
